Who We Are

$36 Million Raised. Countless Lives Impacted.

The Women’s Board of Wolfson Children’s Hospital is a group of committed, philanthropic-hearted volunteers dedicated to raising funds and awareness for Wolfson Children’s Hospital. Formed in 1973, this incredible group of women wouldn’t be where it is today without a remarkable set of twins and their mother, who sparked the group’s passion.

Ellen Cavert Paved The Way

In 1972, Richard and Ray Martin became the parents of two beautiful premature girls, Abbie and Annie. Unfortunately, Abbie passed away not long after birth.  At that time, Wolfson Children’s Hospital did not have the equipment necessary to support her needs.

Her sister, Annie, survived but had to be transported in the back of her parents’ station wagon in an incubator to Shands Hospital in Gainesville, where she stayed for almost five months.

In the face of overwhelming grief, Abbie’s family decided to do something about their experience.  Ray’s mother, Ellen Cavert, worked with the late  Dr. J. W. Hayes, seeking a way to bring much-needed funds and awareness to Wolfson Children’s Hospital.

They developed The Women’s Board.

Starting in 1973 with 41 members, The Women’s Board has grown to include more than 400 volunteers who give their time, talent, and treasure, to raise awareness and funds for Wolfson Children’s Hospital. To date, the group has raised more than $35 million for Wolfson’s pediatric programming and has watched it become one of the highest-ranked pediatric hospitals in the country, with acclaimed international recognition.
